Richard Gere has had a clash of cultures. Recently, Richard Gere and Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty took the stage together at an AIDS Awareness event in New Delhi.
While speaking she held Gere's hand, which he kissed. Then apparently Shilpa's beauty overtook Gere, and he felt it necessary to kiss her cheeks, and "dip" her on stage.
Here's a clip:
Now I hear they are burning effigies of Richard Gere, and pictures of Shilpa in India. All because public displays of affection are taboo.
Maybe someone can explain why this act is so terrible. I realise there was a misunderstanding between cultures, but burning effigies of the guy?
To me, it sounds like the crowd loved it. Why the over reaction?

You can't really judge it by your own standards.. they have their culture their feelings about such things, and thats what they're reacting by. How Americans feel about it is a completely separate matter.. So, they have the 'right' to react that way, if he knew (which I'm sure he did) how they felt about such things he should have respected it in my opinion, it wasn't necessary to become 'overwhelmed' with her beauty on stage.. he could have waited until they were behind the curtains.
1He should have stopped at kissing her hands. Even by American standards he looked like a dumbass.
2I like him but he was a numskull there!!!

I think if anyone is in another country, they should respect their culture. I think he went too far.
4DC! I'm so bummed woman, I found some sheets I really like on amazon cause I have that giftcard.. they dont have the sizes I need
5While it may be in there culture to not show public displays of affection , there is such a thing as overreacting . This would hit the nail on the head. Give me a break.
6Yes, I guess considering he was in India and not america, and he didn't contain it to even a hug and simple kiss (celebrity acceptable) on the cheek, he went over the line.
Calling for an apology (which I think they should get) is a far cry from burning effigies though. Even she is saying the reaction is out of hand.

everything about this seems outta hand. he should have respected their culture.
8When you go to someone else's house, you follow their rules. It's basic manners, and it seems like pretty much all of America needs a refresher. Yeah, that's no big deal here, what with our "nip-slips" and whatnot, but it's a big world out there, some places are a lot more liberal(e.g. Holland), and others are a lot more conservative(like India).
9Bear in mind, this is a culture that allows no nudity in their version of Playboy, and Fashion TV is always under fire for being borderline obscene.
One should always bone up on acceptable behavior before traveling to another country, so Richard Gere's mistake was not doing that. That being said, it wasn't a gesture worth making into an international incident. He made a mistake.
10He should have known better, but burning effigies of the guy seems out of hand. Burning things in protest over pretty much anything seems out of hand to me.
11lol Jen76, I never thought of it that way!

Just watching this, he crossed a line. Her body language totally indicates she was not comfortable with this at all.
